Another Trip, Another Blog

When we decided to head to Norway for two weeks this summer, we knew we wanted to write another blog. I mean, honestly, I’ve gotta figure out how I can become a professional blogger – I am SO into it!

About a week ago, I threw out some ideas for a blog name, but nothing resonated with the family. And then I flipped through a Norway book borrowed from the library and saw a photo of a Norwegian sign with one word: Skootertrafikk. Skootertrafikk! It was a fun word to say and it seems like the signs are ubiquitous in parts of Norway. So welcome to our blog, Skootertrafikk.

As we travel across Norway over the next couple of weeks, we’ll post updates and stories here. We’re excited to visit Oslo, Bergen, the Lofoten Islands, Stavanger, and a few other places. Taylor is excited about seeing fjords (the horses, not the waterways). Wyatt is looking forward to “everything.” Tim really wants to eat sheep’s head (funny, I don’t feel the same way). And I’m looking forward to quality family time in an egalitarian, we’ve-got-your-healthcare-and-social-security-covered place.

On Thursday morning, we got to breakfast early so we could fuel up and be on time for a fishing trip that left from the dock just outside our fisherman’s cabin (hotel room). We walked to the dock at the appointed time and met Frank, the first mate. When Frank introduced himself to us, he said his name like “Franck” and all I could think of was Martin Short’s character from ‘Father of the Bride.’ I took utter delight in saying Franck throughout our fishing trip. Turns out Frank’s son, Christopher, was captain of our fishing boat. Christopher runs a fishing business out of Ballstad and spoke perfect English. Given that the two biggest industries on the Lofoten Islands are fishing and tourism, I think most people we’re coming into contact with speak perfect English. But I digress. Bodø, the Ferry, and Getting to the Lofoten Islands

After a 90-minute flight from Oslo on Monday evening, we arrived in Bodø (pronounced like Buddha), a town that’s just north of the Arctic Circle. Our hotel was a short taxi ride from the airport; Bodø is quite compact and easy to get around. Once we dropped our bags in the hotel room, we walked down to the ferry terminal to scope things out. Our Monday evening walk and attempt to figure out how the heck this ferry works. There’s a car ferry from Bodø to the Lofoten Islands, and Tim had spent a lot of time researching it online. He wanted to see for himself what the ferry set-up was, as he couldn’t purchase our outbound ticket in advance. Torghatten Nord, the ferry company, sells 50% of its tickets ahead of time – these are the reserved tickets; the remaining 50% of tickets are on a first come, first served basis. Take Us Back to Norway!

We’ve been back from Norway for almost a week, returning in time for the ‘hurriquake’ in California. There have been quite a few instances this week where we’ve said to each other, “We wouldn’t see that trash in Norway.” “It’d be daylight right now in Norway.” “This would run so much more efficiently in Norway.” Ahh, Norway. After spending two weeks in this beautiful country, we have a few observations to share with our readers. Here goes: 1). Everything is clean. And I mean everything. Ok, ok, so we saw a little bit of trash in the cities, specifically Stavanger and Bergen, but everywhere else was pristine. Not a lick of trash. People are just respectful! And where you find a trash can, you’ll also find a receptacle for recycling and for food waste. 2). There are no billboards. None. Ok, ok, so I saw one small billboard on a run in Bergen, but otherwise, zero billboards! There were some larger (but still small) signs on some of the main highways we traveled, but these were cre...
